Maternity leave depends on what kind of work you do but usually it's around 8 weeks and at some offices you can ask for an extension. Usually the extension isn't paid though.

Apparently, Denmark, Sweden, France, and Germany have over 30 weeks of PAID maternity leave!!! :O Some of them even have free day care! Why is the US so behind? :p

Maybe society does not expect men because it is a natural instincts that is still programmed in our genes. If you look at nature, the majority expect the female to play this role. I feel that we are slow changing some instincts, like the ability to sense danger (dam it, that would be so cool). If that is the case, it may take centuries to mutate this genetic instinct.

We're more behind thank you think for example I just had a co worker use a combination of short-term disability (STD), sick leave, vacation, personal days, and unpaid family leave because our company doesn't even offer an official maternity leave. Sad really.

even canada has something (i believe its 50 weeks, with 55% of your salary up to $457 per week or $43200 per week) but still i never heard much from the us. This is the reason, some parents after having their 2nd or 3rd child, will go on leave for a year, and then they decided to quit their job all together to watch over several young children/infants.

Should women do most of the work? no. And i think there is a growing trend of stay at home dads and equality when it comes to house work

I think, it depends on the family. Not all women are super(wo)man.

Decision of the couple, I think. If they can resolve it peacefully its fine in general.

But no, in general I do not think women should do most of the housework/childcare - I like to believe the genders are more equal now and that women can do their jobs just as good as men can. Stereotypes will always exist though, and if we want to break the barrier it should start with kids themselves (let them play with whatever the hell they want for example -I was one of those girls who wanted a radio controlled jeep and got a barbie. BIG DOWNER). But it also means that you shouldnt push kids to the other way as well. If they want to be the mom who stays home with the kids and is happy, well then that shouldnt be a problem. :)

It really depends on the agreement of the family. I mean, I come from a family where my mum is the breadwinner and my dad stays at home. So he does all the housework and cooks (extremely well!)

It was a mutual decision though, so I think it is perfectly fair.

However, if the woman is FORCED and expected to do all the housework and would face punishment if they don't (mainly in more traditional societies) then I don't think it is fair. But that is their tradition, and who are we to judge them? Hopefully they will learn to modernize and get rid of some of that old thinking.

    I like doing stuff.
    Like decorating houses and cleaning.
But maybe it's because I'm female at heart <3
But then again this is one hell of a sexist-but-needed topics.

I guess it really depends on who does what... Women play one of the most important parts... doing the dirty work, and us as males don't cred them enough for their dedication to the housework... W_W

It all depends on what jobs/ qualitlies both man & woman have. For instance My boy friend works 6 days a week normally 60+ hours a week, se generally he doesnt have time to do much work around the house . I do most of the work cause i am currently job searching & have the time. But if both are able to work around the house i think it should be split equal

I thinkg that if the husband doesn't work then he should do it all, if the woman doesn't work she should, it should rely on who is home the whole time

As an overarching cultural issue, it does seem that women are on average better at childcare. That is to say nothing about housework. However, naturally anybody should be free to either enter the workforce or be a "stay at home ___".

Currently my father has been a stay-at-home dad for my kid sister for quite some time now, and the affair has worked out just as well as if it was the other way around.

I think it depends on the situation. Every family is different and should do what makes them happy. I know my mom always did the cooking and cleaning and she liked it that way. I am a female though and hate to clean so my husband does it but I do cook most meals. The split works for us but may not work for others.

It depends on the situation, sometimes it is better for the woman because generally speaking the woman feeds the child, but housework should be shared by both.

I don't necessarily think they /should/, but I, myself, personally would want to. I'm kind of old-fashioned. I'd rather be a housewife than a provider.

There's benefits to having either job.
I don't think it matters who does the job, male of female but I think the idea of one person doing a really hard job that pays a lot coming home to their wife/husband that can care for them and keep the house clean is a fair deal, in fact being the housewife/husband would actually be better because you do whatever jobs that need to be done at home, feed the kids then the rest of the day you could just relax.
    There's my point of view.
