For a few weeks now every so often my nod pops up with a threat alert. It keeps saying a trojan has been detected and probably a variant of trojanVB dropper or something like that. Any way it gets rid of it but every time it seems to have infected a new system file such as a registry or system32 file of such (i only half know what im talking about) with the program svchost.exe it doesnt seem to affect anything i do apart from this but im worried it might be using my bandwidth. i found on wiki that trojans commonly use the svchost.exe as their disguise (hence the name trojan). I have already run a deep scan and clean in safe mode of my windows xp profesional and this did not seem to clear up the problem. Can anybody reccomend some advice or something that might help me please?
What virus scanner are you using? And you may want to consider a spyware scanner if you haven't done that yet. I use Lavasoft Ad-Aware and it's always been really good about getting rid of things (especially tricky things that seem to stick.)... And as for virus scanner, I use AVG Free, and it's always worked really well for me. Try those out maybe?
since i mentioned nod comes up with threat alert i would have thought people assumed i use nod32. i also have adaware and adwatch and run them frequently. all they pick up are undesirable mru lists and cookies or whatever. not helping in this case but since you said i will scan with adaware again for the sake of it. thanks for the input
I use ZoneAlarm, and I'm extremely happy with it. I don't know how up-to-date or dependable those free ones are, but that's just me.
i only use Nod32 and adaware pro. once in a while, i'll scan spybot search and destroy, but that usually picks up only 1 or 2 items
Yeah for me, when I had mad viruses and spyware crap, I had to run it like 4 times to get EVERYTHING gone. Even when it was to the point where my computer was taking like 15 minutes to start up. AVG free is definitely the best virus scanner I've come across in my time, I'm sure what ever everyone else is using is great too. That's just the best I've found so far.
I had some trojan infecting my comp but got rid of them after installing Mcafee. Not that the trojan did much to my comp though.
Yeah see when I had McAfee, or Norton or whatever came pre-installed on my computer, the virus like, infected it, and then it popped up 'VIRUS FOUND! DELETE FILES ASSOCIATED?" So of course, wanting no viruses, I said yes, and the thing deleted a part of itself and stopped working!!!
yea thanks guys but im really not asking what anti-virus software everybody uses. (this isnt a virus chat im really needing help!) I have software and i have been infected i was asking for help with what to do to get rid of it since it has embedded itself in my system files. like, i have to do something other than run a virus scan.
Run your own Windows virus-scan. It detects pretty much all the stuff. Or if you want a good firewall, you need Zonealarm. And don't use mcafee!!
ARrrr potato! Sorry, I've been itching to post that. Anyways, the only way you're going to be able to get rid of it is to run a virus scan, and we're all just suggesting good softwares to use. *cough*ZoneAlarm*cough* Are you looking for something free or not?
There is another good way to get rid of it, if those different softwares dont work. It's the good ol' format... just make sure you back up anything thats important.
my friend told me something about deleting its entry in hkey_sdjikgn blahblah something but i wasnt really listening does anyone know what he may have meant? or how to do it? if not i have to buy him a carton of beer and take my computer to his house and let him fix it.......
Yup, it gets to the point were you've spent so much time on it that you could have just formatted and re-installed, as someone just mentioned. to be honest, that's your best option imo. some of these things are so hard to get rid of, and you never know when they will pop up again. I'd back up data, format, reinstall, and don't restore your files until you have AV software, all windows patches and anti spyware installed, or you may be right back to where you started
