or are they both not worth it and should i just get a wolfdale?

    what's your budget

    pure performance

    performance vs power usage

    performance vs cost

    check out tom's hardware

neither of those sound like a quadcore, props to you

core 2 extreme is quad core :( in fact, dual xeons would be 8 cores. :p
well the whole point was that tomshardware doesnt have anything on dual processor configurations

ahh sadness, suppose that what i get for not actually looking xD

quad core is pointless, no multithread program uses them in anything but name and even those are limited to CAD, Solidworks...etc.

One game can use dual cores and that SuC, in fact it chugs my friends quadcore 4870 machine but is the money really worth just that?

dual cores are feasible in that you reasonbly can keep both tasked on a regular basis, i.e.: one for your game one for all else, one for ripping music, one for the net

so...unless you are a Eng/Phy/Math major, really really like Supreme Commander or are seriously ADD: running CD burning, CoD4, Net, HD Porn, and your ABer all at once I don't see the point.

And really even with all that a second computer would possibly be cheaper if it was relegated to the less demanding stuff.

Again I really can't be assed to dig though all the hype unless I'm actually building the machine, but are there no dual core CPUs in this:

well i am kinda tempted to get a wolfdale, its like 1/5 of the price and runs at 3 ghz, but im not sure it would be awesome enough if you know what im saying. like idk if im gonna use all the power but its good to have it

Just get the Wolfdale. 3.0 GHz dual-core is plenty, even for most gamers.
I'm running a 2.53 ghz dual-core, and its performing amazingly well. You could always OC if need more power. Quad-core isn't worth it for the vast majority of people. But if you're going to get Gentoo or Gentoo derivatives (like Sabayon), quad-core is the way to go for amazing compiling speed. btw, there are ways in the new version of portage to make compiling super fast for multi-core processors. Just ask me if you ever get Gentoo ;)

The wolfdale is all around really good. The yorkfield might be better for some things that we've already mentioned, but the wolfdale would generally be better. Honestly, if you're friends are really as computer illiterate as you say, you could just say you have a quad-core and they wouldn't know the difference (assuming you just want a quad to show off) :p

Standard 7200 RPM, 3.0 GB/S SATA drive will do you just fine billy. If you wanna go extreme, knock yourself out. ;)

well i have a wd raptor atm, so a 7.2k drive would kinda be a downgrade. but i will only buy the ssd if i find extra room in my budget. now graphics cards. should i go ati or nvidia? ati has really crappy drivers, but the new 4800 series is really good. nvidia has tons of defective cards, but they have physix support and the possibility to run CUDA apps. so im not sure which is the best :S

I dunno too much about Windows, but ATI performs better on Linux according to benchmarks. ATI has much better Linux driver support than nVidia does. nVidia cards have some trouble with KDE 4, so if you intend to get that then you should probably get an ATI.

AHHHHHH, EVIL, WHERES BILLY AND WAT HAVE YOU DONE W/ HIM?

ahem, but to make my post less spammy:
Good computer, awful awful awful choice of software
The graphics card is bit... um... expensive... I'm pretty sure you could get a slight downgraded gfx card for much less
    If you're going to go that high-end, you might as well get 4x2gb: 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227267
I don't like the case so much, it looks kinda plain to me.
And jeez, that's one expensive cpu fan. are you going to OC or something?

the ram is too expensive, and hell yeah, overclocking pwns, you can bring the wolfdales up to 4ghz with proper water cooling.
i chose that case because its noise insulated to some degree, but i really wanted a full tower, but they were too expensive, damn ssd having to be like $400.
and zero... ummm no i love my pwnful uber 4870, but i guess ill go down to the 4850 for $100 less. i also think the mobo might be just a little bit of overkill

The RAM is too expensive? o_O
    $60 for 4 gigs is a steal

Its a pain though if you've never done it before. I needed to OC my RAM because the mobo kept putting it at 667 mhz, but I had to find a stable voltage for it which took a long time.

Yeah, that's what I meant by a small downgrade for a big price difference :p

overclocking ram is weird... idk it just is. :p
but im not really sure about the ssd :s its really expensive and i could get some other cool components for the price but apparently it really is that much better
