I use my laptop more than my pc and as a result have used up over half of my hard drive on the laptop.

I am thinking about buying an external hard drive (mainly so I can shove my non-legit stuff on there), but there are so many different brands. I have no idea which ones are good or bad.

If someone could please advise me on what brands are good ones to look for it would be very much appreciated.

you should try to get one of those small laptop drives... what are they called again.. because they do not have to use an external power source, just the power from your usb port, and those drives are smaller and more portable. i also recommend making sure the drive is sata, as it would make transfer much faster. other than that, any brand is good to get, if you tell me a price/size range, i can find one for you.

Yep, would prefer something that just works off the usb port. What is sata? Was thinking of a size 40gb or higher.

Before there was different connection for HD:
    -ATA (for all IDE/EIDE)
    -SCSI
and now there's SATA (stand for serial ATA).
The major difference is transfert rate. SCSI is still faster (with HD spinning at 15K rpm)
but SATA was created to speed up things a bit from the ATA drive.

Edit: IMO, this one looks nice :

Thanks peeps for all the help. I understand things a bit more now. Hopefully I will buy one later without too much problem now, as I know what I am looking for.
