    Hey guys, I'm very curious about this. Neopets is cool and everything, but i'm starting to find it quite boring and want to create my own virtual 'pet', well...not really 'pet', but a virtual website just like neopets or any other virtual website. I was curious on what is required to make such a site and how do you code things the way they are...just like on the neopets site?

    I don't know much as far as something so big.
    But all I know is you need a lot of experience with html, php and java scripts.
    Php creates password forms and chat boards.
    I'm not sure about the stuff that allows you to send items to someone else, etc.
    Sorry i'm no help. I know this much.

    understandable. Thats why you need to be an experience programmer like TNT has. I'm just really curious. I feel like making my own virtual site for the fun of it since Neopets are starting to go down the drain

    Creating a successful site would be extremely difficult for you due to your lack of knowledge in programming as a whole. You should learn PHP most over HTML or Javascript as it is the biggest factor in web development in a site like that. You should also use MySQL for the databases.

    Along with PHP, HTML, Java, MySQL, and CSS you'll need an artist or graphics designer. A lot of sites are judged by there graphics.

    interesting. So, it would just involve a lot of coding and graphic design.

    Yes. Graphics design is a really big part of a pets site. You have to be extremely skilled and know what you're doing.

    so, lets just say i want to create a Virtual world of 'Star Wars' and want to create some simple 'human avatars' that they can choose from as well as various characters. So, if I wanted to make such site, how would copyright play a role? If i gave the appropriate Copyright on the site, would I still have potential to be sued if i went and created the site even though I don't even intend to make any profits?

    Well, I'm not 100% sure, but even if there is ads on the site you are making a profit. As long as members are coming, you will have to find a way to pay for the fees of running such site. It really depends on the company. Lucas Works (?) probably wouldnt care or notice because Star Wars is so big, but you never know.

    If you do, make sure you take a PHP/CSS class and a Graphics Design course. Also, if you learn flash that would be a plus.

    I used to know a website that actually let you make your own pet websites..
    I don't know if it is still up, but if you googled it, you might be able to find a similar thing.. It would be a lot easier then learning coding and whatnot..
    Good luck. (;

    thats what i'm trying to do right now. I just need to find the right courses that they are under

    edit: I just noticed that Neopets will have an internship program for Spring 2009. I would try to do an internship for them and learn, but the college that I'm at is like 3 hours away and i can't drive down there all the time

    I think you should go for it. The internship would be a great experience. I wouldn't miss it for anything If I had the chance.

    That's a good idea. I'm sure they will have another internship. I know one thing they look at is your past neo history. Basically, you should probably lie and say you've never played it, or you might not make it in. If they catch on that you cheat, that would be bad.

    That's good! A++++

    TNT may require basic knowledge of coding though. You may want to read up and study on the languages I posted earlier before you make any commitments.
