If you're using wireless, you should be able to:
    1. Encrypt the connection, so that you're the only one who can access it.
    2. Go to the settings on the computer where the router was installed and allow your computer to get the most out of the connection. The other people using the connection will either not be able to get on the internet when you're using it or just get a really slow connection. But you're going to be just fine. :)

well, it all depends on what kind of connection you're getting, and what other people are doing on it.
If it's dial up, you're screwed.
if it's wireless, you should be able to access the server, and block the sites that other people go to.

Bah. Don't listen to anyone else.
Look for a program that throttles bandwidth. You choose what bandwidth, you give to who.
IE. You can have 60% of the total resources at the time, and you give them the other 40%.

Im too lazy to find the program right now, but I was using it when I lived with my brother and he left his limewire and utorrent on all day.
