Next year, I'm going to need a laptop for uni but I want to get it now... thing is, I'm pretty clueless about what to get. I'm prob going to buy it from Best Buy or Future Shop, dunno where else to get (btw, I live in Canada).

Should I go for Macbook or no? They're more expensive.. I'm looking for something slightly smaller so it's lighter and easier to carry around, nothing too pricey, I'd say $1000-ish is my limit. My mom's buying it for me and she'll only get it if there's a deal on it -_- ..

So any advice on what to get? What OS? What processor? etc etc.

Hi, I'll try to be as helpfull as I can :D
So first, in canada (whell at least in quebec), you won't find better deal on laptop somewhere else than BB or FS. On some high-end system, you may find cheaper in some specific store, but for dirt cheap system, that's the way to go. There's also the possibility of buying online. I was just looking at dell.ca and they have an awesome deal at the moment:

    Dell Inspiron 1501 = 499,99$
    http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_1501?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Since you told that it was for university, I'm sure this laptop can do the job (I'm a lot more).
I made all the calculation and for $591.40 tax in, this laptop is delivered right at your door. And this price include a bigger batterie lasting almost 5 hours (My friend just bought one and I'm trully amaze!)

There's also place like http://www.tigerdirect.ca and http://www.ncix.com where you can buy laptop directly online but if something broke, it's a pain in the ass to return it for repair.

At bestbuy, you should take a look at the Aspire AS3680-2354, in special right now at 549.99$.
IMO, you don't really need a 1000$ laptop. You just need a good laptop, lightweight as you'll probably carry it a lot with a good battery, and the dell one might just do the job.

    Hope this help !

Edit: Forgot to say, stay away from macbook... they are good computer but cost too much just because they have the little apple on the cover. And since Mac is now using Inter chipset, I don't see the point having a laptop witch is doing the same job as another one for twice the price... But again, that's my opinion.

Ooh thanks a lot but only problem is, my mom is really fussy and wants an Intel processor x_x

So the Macbook isn't worth it? A lot of my friends have one and the features seem so cool.

Yeah, Mac OSX do have nice feature. Like I said, it's only because of the chipset vs price that I don't see why they're charging so much for their product.

As for you need, you can also check with dell 1520 series... samething as the 1501 but with intel chipset (and 100$ more, just for an intel [...])

No ! In fact, the AMD is faster than the intel (I'm only speaking of the deal of dell 1501 vs 1520)

i have a dell xps m1210 its very small but lightweight i think i payed like 1200-1300 but thats with an included Tv turner im sure you could do something up on dells website for an intel cpu for still fairly cheap. I also agree that amds are the way to go as far as speed and price goes but from the sounds of it, its not like your planning on doing any serious gaming or anything on them so you should be fine with just about anything you buy. As far as the Os goes id personally stick with Windows Xp unless you got the mac route which is also a fine idea. (ive haven't used one for a little while). When reading I heard the latest Os's both have been having problems with them. I have Vista on my laptop and have no problems with it but may want to stick away just in case.

Definitely get a macbook.. I did, and it's awesome. You can get a few hundred dollars cheaper also with the college discount.. even if you aren't enrolled in college just say you are.. they don't check :)
