I am thinking of getting linux on an extra hard drive. which one is best? i have seen a few and i like opensuse and Arch Linux the best (xandros is my fav but its not free). is there any one linux that is the best or should i just get the one that looks the nicest?
It really depends on what you want. I personally prefer Gentoo Linux. The installation can take about 36 hours, but it builds the kernel around your hardware. IMO it's the best distribution if you want to be able to customize every aspect of your operating system, though it's hard as hell to use and install in the first place. The easiest I've ever used was SUSE, and I heard Ubuntu is pretty good too with a lot of community support.
If you want free, go with Red Hat. It's the only one I've tried (I got many recommendations for it) but I love it so far. I've heard a lot of good things about Ubuntu as well. As for ones you need to pay for, I can't say I'm too sure. I haven't done enough research on it to find out.
36 HOURS!!!!!          !!!!!!!   to install linux. how can it take that long to install it?
is it on a disk Well you get what you paid for. It probley has to reformat your hardrive and update drivers.
i ended up downloading Ubuntu because it is small enough to fit on one cd (unlike the fedora i downloaded which uses 5) and i only have one cd so thats very important. is Ubuntu good? and does the smaller file mean less features? lastly, if it does have less features, what are they and is there an add on disk that i can download to install those features?
I enjoy Red Hat as well, never liked Windows.. always made me angry seeing the Blue Screen of Death every 5 minutes on my old machines.. I love Linux for the creativity you can do.
i hate a lot of windows things too. the screen of death, as you said, the viruses, the activation, the fact that you need to re-activate after major changes, no frequent major updates (or new releases), isnt open source, it basically doesnt have enough freedom. i have also heard that linux is faster( havent gotten to test, im burning the installation cd right now and hopefully the next time i post it will be in linux )
Good luck with that, I love Linux, even though I'm on Win98SE at the moment, because this PC sucks! But will be upgrading to Linux and a better system soon, I love it^^
Hmm, that sucks, I'd just try redownloading everything again, you might just be missing a key component, is all.
I've been using linux for a long time, as I need it for many programming works in University. I think Ubuntu is the best. It's debian based and easily updatable. I have tried many distributions and this is the best... in my opinion Please do not gravedig. L_scorpio
