    What system you running? XP/Vista?
    What processor?

    how olds the computer

As a basic rule XP get 2gb
    vista get 4gb
but not all computers can handle that.

And an other question, are you going to use it for surfing on the net or to play games?

Keep in mind that RAM "Random Access Memory" It is a memory storage system that allows information to be stored and accessed in any order. It is much faster for the other parts of the computer to access information stored in RAM than to access data stored on the Hard Drive of the computer, which is why having at least 1 or 2 GB of RAM is very useful in a modern computer. However even with an unlimited amount of RAM your computer will not go light speed unless you also get a good processor.

If you want to browse the net faster, you will need a faster internet connection. Not RAM.

    winblows xp 32bit = limit to 2gigs
winblows xp 64bit = limit to 4gigs i think...not sure on that one

i think what you are trying accomplish is a smooth running pc, to achieve that you need a fast processor, in your case preferribly a dualcore, did u build ur pc or is it a branded comp?

btw, you may have to upgrade to a new mobo + processor if you want to upgrade to more than 1 gig of ram depending on how many slots you have...not sure how many they give nowadays but it used tobe 2 slots heh...

whats your budget limit? i have always pushed building one 100% as branded pc's do some funky stuff to their cases when it comes to upgrading, ive seen very good modern custom computers for like 4-500$ ur probably better off purchasing a new tower; yes :p

Seeing as you have a $500 budget, you can not go wrong with an Asus. It should not be difficult to locate sweet deal for under your budget. It should meet your desired requisites in terms of what you look for in a PC/notebook.
