If it were me, I would buy computer parts off of newegg.com and assemble the computer myself :tehe:
Then install Linux on it of course
It would be incredibly cheap and powerful if you did it this way.

    But that's just me :)

How much are you looking to invest? Are you looking for gaming or all round performance? A computer is only as good as its owner wants it to be, and by saying that I mean factoring in everything you want it to do. Newegg is good if you're going to build a computer, or even eBay, I've gotten parts from both. In the end though, it's really up to the person.

Don't buy vista unless you got to have DX10, i.e. FPS nut, because MS refuses to support that on XP even though they could. Really though DX10 is not used much yet and doesn't have all that great a benefit when it does imo but some people have to have it...usually the kind that insist on having a SLI build.

Don't go Linux unless you really like computers and don't care about mainstream software. Also be read for lots o headachs before it runs right. It's better now but it's still a pain.

Macs are ok but you'll be paying 2-3x for everything and again the mainstream software support really isn't there. Though you can now play Eve Online on them :).

My suggest would be as above learn to build your own computer with parts from newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com, which ever is cheapest. Go with cheap parts first so while you're learning you don't ruin anything, my buddy shorted his power supply to his motherboard for example, then when you know you got it down go for the best of what's been out for a while, imo anyway.
BUT I'd stick with XP atm as the OS.

I just got a new comp few weeks ago

    HP

    3 gigs ram
    560 gig hard drive
    3.0 processer

came with windows vista, cuz woulda costed me an extra 400 bucks to downgrade to windows xp...

vista aint that bad once you get used to it but its annoying as hell in the beginning. if you think about it in a few years every new software made will be intended for vista cuz its the "new" thing from microsoft...so getting it now or getting it later it really doesnt matter, but going back to xp wont really be much use in time.

Except that no one big, people who buy 1000s of copies as apposed to us, is adopting it and most are instead pushing for XPs continued support, and MS has already pushed back the support date once. The point to not supporting Vista is to show MS that we as consumers will not support this crap they are trying to push down our throats. And everyone used your argument to support to Windows ME and well we all see what happened to that OS. It's fine that your using Vista, i'm not sure I'd pay 400 just to get XP, I'd probably pirate it at that point, since xp oem is like 150 dollars full price...but please no FUD.

get an extended warranty, its worth it, and xp is being phased out, vista will take over, so join the bandwagon

Extended warranties are statistically shown to not be worth the cost, and I used to work for Sony electronics in the repair center. Hardware made by respectable companies generally fail within the first year, read like a few weeks, if at all; within reason. That's to say if your RAM doesn't die before your factory warranty runs out it's likely to last 10 years easy, while your HDD will die around 3-5 years regardless, though even there some companies offer 5 year factory warranties. Do not waste your money on warranties beyond this. Accidental physical damage is about the only exception I would make to this.

One caveat, use the hell out of your stuff within the factory warrant...i.e. don't leave your parts in the box for 2 years then wonder why it fails in the first week after that.

Also if your hardware is failing after the extended warranty AND many others are having the same problem, as it it's due to a manufacturing problem or a design problem, you can often push for a free repair even outside of warranty. Most problems not due to user error that happen after the normal factory warranty happen at design level. A good example being the CMOS on some of Sony's year 2000ish cameras.

Windows, and many fanbois, are making claims of phasing out XP but the reality is quite different atm with Vista hardly being supported. This of course is a losing battle because Windows will force out XP eventaully, popular opinion or not BUT, keep the story of Windows ME in mind AND consider Vista at opening @ 300+ versus now @150+ to in the next 2 to 4 years maybe. There is absolutely no reason to downgrade to Vista right now.
