So I'm buying a laptop and I know nothing about how to go about it.
Can anyone tell me what some good brands are, or what to look for and what to avoid? I'm pretty much technologically-challenged so any advice would help, but no technojumble please, I don't need to be any more confused then I already am. :p

If you're looking for brands, then go for Acer or Toshiba.
About the hardware of it, one with 512mb ram and 2.0 ghz of processor is already good.

Get a MacBook. It's cute, and Macs are better than PCs.

agreed, macbooks rock. with bootcamp you can also use windows xp, but osx is better anyways.

I'm thinking about getting a lap top too

my friend just got a new one from dell. and I really like the screen.

Its different from the way other screens are on laptops... theres not that wierd scratchy screen that messes up when you touch it.

I don't remember what it's called.. True Life

    But I really like it

she said the only thing she didnt like was that the battery didnt last long enough. only about an hour. but you could get the longer lasting battery for a littlebit extra

    Edit:

Let me just add... With Dell... THEY OUTSOURCE ALL THEIR TECH SUPPORT SO YOU CAN"T UNDERSTAND A WORD THEY SAY!!!!

but other then that.. it's good

Depends on your price range really.

I personally do not like Mac's OS, so I refuse to have anything to do with their systems at all. The choice between mac, and PC, is really up to the consumer.

I know Toshiba has great laptops, my friend just got one, and is pleased, also, If you have the money for it, to invest. Alienware puts out a good laptop if you get a high end one.

    Specs:

    Do not go below

    2 ghz
    80 gb HD
    512 RAM

Also, I'd advise you to stay away from Vista if at all possible. Thats just personal prefs though.

Your best bet is to look at several laptops, and then google them all. Find the user reviews, etc. and pick the one you like the best after researching.

Many laptops and desktops come pre loaded with vista already. If your budget is high then get a laptop with:

    2.0 ghz or higher
    2 gigs ram
    100 gb hd or higher

those can get a bit pricey.

I recently got my Sony Vaio notebook and its doing pretty well its specs are:
Intel Duo Core T7100 1.7ghz (not bad for a a notebook)
    2 gigs ram
    200 gb hd
    15.4 in screen

    Price: $1400

or you can get a Macbook if you willing to deal with their OS. (lol vista sux dont get it)

They're not really hard to use at all.
    A monkey could operate it.

I get a Dell Latitude,Windows Vista installed, its perfect for me...
but my advice is, if you plan to install 3-D pc games, photoshop kind of stuff or other heavy programs, a laptop may disappoint you a bit ^
unless you get a powerful Motherboard with a good RAM support.

I'm using a dell notebook (inspiron 6000) on windows XP software. It's actually pretty good for daily uses, but it's not exactly light either. It's not too bad price-wise and pretty good all around. You'll want patience when it comes to boot-up time though. I'd give it a 4-out-of-5.

I have a Dell Latitude D820, and it's a pretty good laptop. I haven't had hardly any problems with it at all actually. In fact, I spilled water on it and I let it dry out and it STILL worked completely fine, so it's really durable.

Right now though, I'm in love with MacBooks, so I'm thinking about selling this one in order to get a Mac. (But that's just personal preference, not any problems with the Dell.)
