Ok I am not sure if this topic should be here or in games. So apologies if it is in the wrong section and can a mod move it for me if it is.

I recently bought an old PC game, mainly just to add to my collection. On the back it states that to be able to play the game I need a DOS operating system. Is this something I can download or find? Any information about DOS would be gratefully received, as I have no idea what this is. I am a bit of an idiot when it comes to computers, give me a PS2 any day. :yup: :yup:

I'm pretty sure Windows comes with DOS. Just try to run the game and see if it works - if it doesn't, tell us the error message and somebody might be able to help you better.

That might be why DOS just actually ring a bell with me, just not sure why.

Yep you are probably right, shall give it a go later.

Actually, Windows XP don't come with DOS anymore, it emulate DOS, causing most of the old games to failed working. And sound card seems to have a hard time playing sound from those games.
If you got a powerfull pc, you can try using DosBox. This app works nice, play sound and can play almost all older games. And best thing of all : it's free :yup:

Oh, that is brilliant. Many thanks. I did try playing the game, and it sort of did something and a box popped up and then really quickly disappeared. So that must be why, I shall go and have a look at the DosBox thing. :)

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox0.72-win32-installer.exe?download
this is the good link if you are running windows 32 bit.

then, time to launch the app
you'll need to know some dos basic command.

See http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic Setup and Installation of DosBox for a startup guide

Eventually, you'll be able to modify the .ini file for dosbox, you can set all your thing so everything is done automatically when you start the application, like witch folder to mount, processor speed, sound, mouse, cd-rom, driver.

If you need more help, let me know.

Personally when i want to run old dos games, i run vmware with DOS or windows 95. But even then some games wont work due to the way expanded/extended memory used to work. What game was it by the way?
