From wiki  : For other uses, see Open source (disambiguation). Open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials—typically, their source code. Some consider it as a philosophy, and others consider it as a pragmatic methodology. Before open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; the term open source gained popularity with the rise of the Internet and its enabling of diverse production models, communication paths, and interactive communities.[1] Subsequently, open source software became the most prominent face of open source practices. The open source model can allow for the concurrent use of different agendas and approaches in production, in contrast with more centralized models of development such as those typically used in commercial software companies.[2] "Open source" as applied to culture defines a culture in which fixations are made generally available. Participants in such a culture are able to modify those products and redistribute them back into the community.
I think its a good idea for small projects where the only thing you can gain from them is knowledge, but if you give the source to a project that makes a company billions then your pretty stupid.
open source is an easy free way of developing software/programs on a massive scale ...yeah, I think it's pretty okay
it would be ok, so long as the intellectual rights go to the person who cam eup with them, not just tossing them to the internet wind
I love opensource. Why pay upwards of $90 for Microsoft office when you can just download openoffice? It basically has all the features and can open up word/excel/ppt files as well.
Open source is a great thing. You could learn quite a bit about how something works and yet modify it to your liking.
Only if those MSFT nubs would realize how great opensource is. They keep promoting IE into every OS and having security problems.
Open source technologies are the best technologies. They tend to have quicker updates to flaws, they are just as secure if not more secure then closed source projects, and they help teach other programmers a few tricks.
open source tends to be even better than commercial software. mostly because the people developing are doing it because they have passion for it and care about the project rather than just grinding away to get a paycheck.
