My brother's computer came with XP built in and we weren't given a disc. I know the whole trick with checking to see if the manufacturer copied the disc, but the problem is, the computer won't start up for us to check!

The message that comes up is something like "NTLDR is missing". Apparently we need to insert the recovery disc, but as explained, we can't do that.

Any ideas? The copy of XP we have is completely legal, we just weren't supplied with the disc.

The computer is years old in all honesty anyway, but thought I'd see if there's anything we can do.

You could download an illegal copy ;)
Or if you wan't to stay legit, send a little email to Microsoft telling them of your situation (they respond in 1-2 days)
Or, switch to Linux =P <-- Pick this one :tehe:

To be blunt, if you don't understand, then don't post...

Guess I'll email Microsoft then and hope they respond. Thanks Absolute :)

If anyone else does have any ideas, please post or PM me :D

    Thank you!

It is not illegal to download a copy of XP, especially if you own a serial. Stop listening to the FUD.

Switching to Linux in this case has no merit as you can have this same problem.

If you have access to another computer you can use "www.thepiratebay.org" to search for a .iso copy of xp and then download it via http://www.utorrent.com. If you need burning software download Nero whatever the newest one is...I suggest the lite version. If you don't understand what I'm talking about go to wikipedia and read about torrents or just google bit torrent. Sometimes it can be hard to burn a bootable operating disc, even if the files are legit it won't boot, there can be many factors here unfortunately this kinda thing is a step more difficult then downloading say a game.

You can try as suggested to look for the nessisary files, create a XP boot disc (CD in this case) with this file in the root directory of the CD but honestly it is much easier to just do a clean install. If you are worried about losing files just don't format but do an install over it and you should not lose anything in your "my documents" folder and the like. Once you do get all the important files I recomend acutally do a full format.

In the future if/when you buy a computer/ new operating system get a OEM system disc...make sure it allows multiple installs, don't buy one with MSs bullshit 3x uses, no new hardware config *choke* lisense.

Alternatively if you have no moral qualms the easists option is to download a student/corperation no lisense/registration version of XP.

*non sequitur* Don't upgrade to vista....*/non sequitur*
