Suppose you have five six-sided dice. Each die has the following letters on the faces: E, O, I, Y, K, and R.

What are the odds that, upon rolling the five dice, you would be able to spell the name of a Neopet species with some or all of the letters displayed on the dice? Assume each die can only be used once in the word; for example, if you rolled "A,A,B,C,D" you could use A twice, but B, C, and D only once.

Please submit your answer as a whole number, rounded to the nearest whole number. (i.e. if the odds are 1 in 100, submit the answer "100".)

Any ideas? I have no idea how to go about calculating this one!

    E - Y - R - I - E

No idea how to do the odds thing lol. 1/5 chance to get 1 E. Then the other, so 1/10? So would it be .. 1/25? o_O

There's more than one species available to get though. Koi comes to mind.

    17 (or 1/17 chance)

    There are a total of 7776 dice outcomes (6^5 = 7776)...

And only four neopets can be spelled with those 6 letters...
    Koi
    Kiko
    Kyrii
    Eyrie

So using permutations, here are the number of ways to spell those four neopets...
    Kyrii (5x4x3x2x1 = 120)
    Eyrie (5x4x3x2x1 = 120)
    Kiko (4x3x2x1x6 = 144)
    Koi (3x2x1x6x6 = 216)

That totals 600 but because every combination of Kiko also spells Koi, 144 needs to be subtracted from 600 which leaves 456...

    456 of 7776 is approximately 1 out of 17...

    Or so I think...

Just curious as to why you rolled 7776 times.

cause there are five dice, each with 6 possible outcomes....so that's 6x6x6x6x6 or 6^5 which equals 7776

Someone on another forum came up with 1/177... and said 17 was too low of an answer.

I dunno though-- math's not my thing!

    17 works for me, haha.

ehhh...I rethought the problem today and I think that answer might be wrong  ...I came up with something like 1 in 3 chance, which seems kinda high...but I tried it out with a real dice and got 5 out of 17 (1 out of 3.4)... :?sorry if I'm wrong...
