It makes the most sense to just save up for a better computer :)
Not Mac though, because they are overly priced.

I have the first generation iPhone, 16gb. I would have sold it and purchased the 3G if it wasn't such insane prices on the subscriptions. But from what I've read, what was impressive about the 3G iPhone wasn't the 3G or GPS, but the 2.0 software. But that's available for the first gen as well.
And I must add that the iPhone have to be my best gadget purchase ever. I can use it to go on neofriends (it's really easy to find an open wifi connection where I live) and all the apps have been amazing. Not to mention that I'm able to play Super Mario Kart and Megaman X on the bus while listening to Animal Collective. ^^

new IPhone rocks :D Loading everything is much faster, plus the white / black back looks a lot cooler. The one bad thing is that (with all IPhones) you are required to use AT&T, which is the most useless cellphone service provider. They were having so many problems with transferring peoples accounts/numbers when the IPhone 3G first came out (which I'm sure you guys heard about..). Yes it's costly, but I would highly recommend it. Maybe wait for 2-3 months and the price might go down (like the original iPhone did)

It's not actually cheaper, it's just subsidized meaning that the carrier pays the extra dollars that it actually cost. In return, they get an agreement with Apple that you can't activate the phone at home anymore, you have to sign the AT&T contract in the store. That means that the phone is actually 2-3 times more expensive than the earlier model, when you count in the monthly fees.
Also, I've heard that the new iPhone not only cracks easily (small cracks but noticable) but there's also a report that at least one 3G iPhone has partly melted because it overheated.
However, the GPS function on the iPhone is something I'd kill for. :p

Amen bruddah! Plus Iphone has infinite problems with its so called flawless touchscreen. Ive already got 700$ saved to buy the N96 when it comes out in October. Look up what a Nokia N96 can do, and we'll see what you think

To everyone who signs up to AT&T when you're buying the 3G iPhone; there is a way to get out of the contract without any EFT. This video is for Verizon, but it should work for most carriers. :)

That depends. If you purchase the first gen iPhone, then you can unlock it and use with any gsm-provider you want. If you want the 3G version you're gonna have to wait quite a while, and you'll only be able to use it with GSM-carriers and get 3G on the side (I don't know how that works, but that's what I've been told in the hackintosh-iPhone channel).
