After reading The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, I am 500+ pages into it's sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire. It's absolutely fantastic. I would recommend it to literally anyone over the age of 15.

The series seems much more girl-friendly, or at least the cover and title rubs off as so.

    Not at all.
Thats just the art on the cover of the book lol.
So much violence, but in a good way. Perfectly spaced out. Great plot. Good characters. plot twists.
I'd recommend it to a guy or a girl.

Geralds Game by Stephen King. I guess it might not be as good as I remember because I read it when I was 14, but the story still haunts me so it's always been one of my favourites.
