Where did you hear the it needed 1Gig of RAM to run?

    Vista System Requirements

According to the Mircrosoft site, Vista will be able to run on a machine with 512MB of RAM...

    I'm using XP

I'd love to have a mac - but unfortunately most programs and games are writtn for Windows - and I know you can get windows emulators for the mac - but if you are running an emulator most of the time you might as well just get Windows in the first place!

i use mac os x on my macbook. I was shocked when i saw how reliable it was. Plus, i was reading up on it, and it doesnt have a single known virus as compared to windows' millions.

Ehy, some shops are selling computers with XP, but you can freely upgrade it to Vista Home Premium/Business

Windows XP is pretty stable. Not exactly good for gaming in my opinion. Windows Vista is apparently a powerhouse though.

Ubuntu Linux. Windows XP absolutely SUCKS and Vista isn't any good either. Most people who disagree with me have never tried an alternate solution (Mac or at LEAST a few different Linux distros). And Linux isn't just for geeks, Ubuntu is now very friendly for lot's of people - better than XP IMO.

When a different OS besides Microsoft implements some feature that might be even basic functionality, leave it to Microsoft to take it 3 years later, dumb it down a bit then make it sound amazing and new.

Except for gaming compatibility. That's the only reason I keep XP around at all.

I was using Window Millenium Edition previously and the whole specs wasn't good at all.. It's wasn't really fast and efficient.. I just got myself a Windows XP.. I'm running on AMD64 Athlon Processor and it's kinda slow and laggy at times.. I suggest XP is great because it's user friendly and it's something that everyone is having to it's easier to repair should something happen to your computer.. If there is a duo core processor, go for that.. The duo core processor will compliment the Window XP as you can run a few programs all at once without really lagging..

Windows XP home edition with media center.

The media center thing annoys me to no end. I hate using it. It doesn't work very well and the controls are so shallow.

not necessarily, I've tried em all, and you're wrong... Linux is a toy - it's nice, pretty and different... XP is a tool, if you use it correctly

    Re: mac

I have OSX on my imac. This is my first mac and the learning curve is much more steep than I thought it would be. But it was the idea of not having to deal with all the virus that made the sale.

I guess this poll answers my question - I wasn't sure if the downloads from here would be compatable or not.
